I think Bod has explained it now. He was meaning that Mussolini used to be a socialist (before WW1) but then moved to the extreme right and became a fascist. It only got confused because he posted that article from the Heartland Institute which claimed fascism was actually left wing.

Bod originally wrote that Mussolini was a "former left wing fascist". So, he meant that he was somebody was formerly left wing, who later moved to the extreme right and became a fascist.

I don't think Elsa meant that. It is just that the way he wrote it was a bit confusing. He has mentioned before that sometimes he doesn't write the best. You have to separate out 'former left wing' from 'fascist'. He was saying Mussolini was a 'fascist' who was also 'former left wing' i.e. someone who was left wing before becoming a fascist.
