Making a cupboard door

I need to make a cupboard door; 600 x 600 and about 30mm thick.

I guess I will use battens and glue/tack board to either side of the batten.

What do I use as the board? ply?

Why don't you just make the door out of a single piece of MDF?

Can I get a peice of MDF that thick?

Also, isn't the edge of MDF easily damaged, it doesn't appear to stand up too well against knocks.

mdf is hard wearing, why such a thick door?

The door is for under the stairs, so it will constantly be yanked open and shoes kicked in.

What are the style of the other doors around the gaff?
If astheticly pleasing would it be ok to make up a door out of wood (matchboard even?)

All other doors in the house are completely flat.

You should find 18mm mdf perfectly adequate, it is stronger than a conventional hollow door and very easy to repair damage on.Paints up perfectly flat.
That small you could make up a pair of draws to fit under and hold the shoes.

If I use battens to make the door, what timber should I glue each side? Ply?

Yes ply will do but very easy to put a foot thru it if its getting kicked about.
