Wonder if he ran that one past the S/E? Probably not - I can see an S/E having kittens over that technique, either that or their laptop would burst into flames! 
(to anyone outside of the trade structural engineers just won't permit this sort of joint any more - in fact they really dislike many of these traditional structural joints)
