Mandatory ID cards (Brit Card) to be announced tomorrow

If the local plod have access to such data, prepare for wide scale abuse of the system, and potentially many young females being subjected to unwanted attention.

Well, possibly.

But really, it's not the potential abuses like that which concern me, it's the compulsion, and the "mission creep".

We already live in a society where it is acceptable, even applauded by some people, for the police to manhandle disabled military veterans in wheelchairs for saying they are opposed to genocide.

It's not unofficial abuses we need to worry about - it's official ones.

We are discussing the ID card to allow people to work, aren't we?
We already have a system that qualifies someone to work, the NI Number.
If this system has faults, won't those faults be built into the "new ID for work" card?
If someone can have multiple NI Insurance numbers now, won't they be able to have multiple "ID for work" cards in the future?

Have you replied to the correct post ? This place is so weird

Not sure what data they will steal, that is not in the public domain.
They will steal your identity, this identity will be used to...

empty your bank accounts
sell your house
cash in your pension
apply for loans in your name
sign contracts for goods you wont receive

Then you come along and say.. hang on I didn't do any of that.

the bank will say - we have your ID mr Nosenout
the land register will say - we have your ID mr Nosenout
your pension provider will say - we have your ID mr Nosenout
the credit card company will say - we have your ID mr Nosenout
the suppler will say - we have your ID mr Nosenout

get the idea?

Maybe you don't know which card we're discussing, or I don't.
We already have a system designed for citizens. It's called a national insurance number.
Brit Card to immigration enforcement, stressing its role in tackling illegal working
Brit Card will not use biometric data and will initially target illegal employment.
So it's a 12 digit number not holding any biometric data. And it will be used for accessing other systems, such as welfare, banking, and other services.
The only differences that I can detect is that
a) it will be a 12 digit number instead of the current NI 9 character number, which some have more than one.
b) one will have to produce the card, or receive some kind of authentication code via SMS or similar when using it electronically. Well that'll be a nuisance having to wait for one of those all the time.
b) it will be used to link banking data to a person's tax, salary, welfare, etc. That would worry me immensely.

Yes I know all that. Your reply doesn’t fit with the post you quoted.

What's an authentication app or two factor authentication and where do you get a live face scan ---- you are talking gobbledygook
Theyre simple enough and commonplace in modern IT. But if you don't know what they mean then you shouldn't really be weighing in on if this is safe or secure.

So no change..

Except they'd need to compromise your password to log in and your 2FA device and stop you getting any of the notifications that get sent out when that's done. And pass the facial scan needed to reassign the 2fa, which I strongly suspect they keep a record of.

Oh and you'd be able to look back at all the transactions and point out they were made using compromised credentials and prove they were fraudulent.

The potential scale of the damage is large, but at the same time the current security for virtually all of those services is far lower.

Also it is far from certain the various commercial companies will be chosen to or even be allowed to make use of this ID service for routine authentication. Wearing my EA hat id advise against it.

The risk of all that and more is present already.

No hoots given.
