I had a very old cast iron manhole cover crack and I have decided to replace the frame aswell. The dimensions of the manhole itself are 480mm x 600mm, and I have had problems finding a correct sized replacement frame and cover. A new clarksteel 450mm x 600mm frame is not wide enough so I was advised to use a 600mm x 600mm frame and cover. The width of the 600mm frame slightly overlaps the 480mm wide opening (reaching the end of the bricks on both sides) and I was wondering the best way to fit the frame securely?
    Hope this makes sense!

If vehicles are passing over then you need the frame to be resting on brickwork.

If only foot traffic then it should be OK if only supported at opposite ends.

but if the frame is wider than the bricks add mortar to ensure its sealed against rats etc,
