I have the builders in at the moment digging out the trenches for a kitchen extension. All was going well, until they found a shaft full of old bricks (as can be seen from the pictures). This has been underground for 60 years, so it clearly isn't in use (maybe there's a pipe at the bottom still in use).

I'm really looking for ideas as to how to get the footings down with minimum fuss (cash); a lintel?, empty it and fill with concrete if possible? i would be grateful for your ideas...
