I have the builders in at the moment digging out the trenches for a kitchen extension. All was going well, until they found a shaft full of old bricks (as can be seen from the pictures). This has been underground for 60 years, so it clearly isn't in use (maybe there's a pipe at the bottom still in use).

I'm really looking for ideas as to how to get the footings down with minimum fuss (cash); a lintel?, empty it and fill with concrete if possible? i would be grateful for your ideas...

that brickwork is in remarkably good nick if it's been buried for 60 years...

your going to have to investigate further into it see what is at the base. best bet may be to ask building control as they will likely take an interest anyway so find out what they'd be happy with.

Cheers for the pointers.

You're right, the brickwork is seriously good. Just in the wrong place!!!!

The builder will arrange for BC to visit tomorrow, I would imagine that we'll have to get the bricks out etc. Nightmare.

Seriously, on top of the thing was the original coal house that I demolished, about two years ago. In about ten minutes. That thing was certainly 60years old!
