Mansard roof insulation options

My property was built in 1820's and had its original roof changed in the 1970's to slates. The mansard covers the first floor up. I know from an extension project on the back of the house a few years ago that their is no insulation between the inside walls and the slates. In summer the upstairs is scorching and in winter freezing. What are my options for insulating?
