marking hinge positions...

Hi Chaps,

Just hoping you can confirm or deny my understanding in respect of marking the position of hinges.

I have made (out of 18mm MDF) some cupboards for a home office.
Wanting to use a standard Kitchen door so made them 720mm high and 600mm wide.
Got the doors and hinges and now want to fit them, but I am nervous about the positioning.

Is the following the best way to do it?

1/ Fit the door part of the hinge to the door and mark centre line of hinge.
2/ Hold the door to the unit in the correct position.
3/ mark the centre of the hinge on the unit
4/ transfer this mark 35mm into the carcas
5/ mark and drill 5mm holes

6/ Open first beer

Holding door to carcass is a little imprecise in method, better to transfer the measurement from hinge position on door to carcass.

iirc the measurment is about 5mm from back edge of hinge to edge of door.

Thanks ....thats why I asked!

But thats a rather imprecise answer....

is there a standard measurement or do I work it out using the datum obtained in point 1/ above?

I know how far back from the front edge of the carcass - 37mm

...and the holes need to be 32mm apart

....but how do I work out the missing measurement apart from using 2/ above?

I'd hold the door to the carcase and mark the centre lines on both door and carcase at the same time -I-.

The 35mm hole centre is drilled about 21mm in from the edge of the door and the 5mm holes for the hinge plate are drilled 37mm in from the front of the carcase at 16mm centres from the centre line of the hinge. Extreme accuracy isn't really an issue as you usually have enough adjustment on the components to line everything up.
