probably, something daft like that. we're running out of this very important resource as we have used most of ours on laughing gas and party balloons, and we still are even though we know it will be a bit of a disaster when its all gone

I'm not interested in the process, rather why Mars? Inhospitable lumps of rock are of no use to us humans, otherwise you'd see huge populations in deserts, polar ice regions, high mountain ranges etc. At least there is breathable air there.
Other than no single point of failure for the human race.

There isn't much of the stuff on Mars, but I stand to be corrected.

The Moon however, has quite a bit of the stuff.
 
I don't know much about fusion, so have had a quick look.

That way seems to produce an alpha particle and a proton. Why is that cleaner than normal fusion.
Fewer neutrons. That means less shielding is needed and the reactor itself would take longer to be damaged by the radiation. Use the wrong materials near a reactor and they can become radioactive themselves so even more waste to manage.
