massive gap between door frame and wall

Hi All,
The builders made brick wall and at the time of fitting door frame they realised that they was a massive gap between external wall and door frame on each side They just simply stuck a joist in and cover the gaps with architrave hoping that i would not find their mistake as i installed the new lock i noticed that the door frame was not sturdy enough so took the architrave out and found out their poor craftmanship. what can i do to resolve this?

Fill the gap with foam filler, cut off excess when dry and refit the architrave.

Extra info: mask up door frame with masking tape and damped down the gap with a spray bottle of water before applying the foam.
