Matching screws with drill bit sizes

I consider myself pretty good at DIY having done loads of stuff to my house, but thing I still don't get is screw sizes compared to drill bits etc.

I get they're 120mm long. But the 10? Is that a diameter of 10mm? They're 1cm thick? I'm sure that can't be right! If not, what does the 10 mean? And what size drill bit would you use to pilot them?

10mm is the shank size the head will be around 20-25mm

One metre = 100 centimetres ( cm ) = 1000 millimetres ( mm )

Hence 10 mm = 1 cm

And yes it is the diameter of the screw

Thanks guys. Seems like a hell of a screw. I'm fitting the folks new upvc front door soon so was looking at these.

So would you use a 10mm drill bit, or go for something bigger because of the plug?
