Between adjoining properties, 2 metres, between a property and a roadway, 1 metre. Extra planning requirements will prbably apply in conservation areas and you may have something in the deeds of your house which specifies boundary fence sizes and types. Also some modern housing (mainly since the 1960s) have planning conditions which prevent the erection of fences (e.g. open-plan estates).
