What is the maximum layers of plaster i can have on a ceiling?
Currently there has been four layers but the old plaster is in a bad state so i want another two new skimmed plaster on top of the old.
I am worried if there are two many layers the ceiling won't be able to hold it.

As many as you want, as long as each layer is adhered well to the previous layer.

Years ago, I read of a story about a bloke who tried to plaster his kitchen ceiling. Took more than a few attempts (I seem to think it got to something like 6” thick) but it made the papers because the whole lot came down on him and his mate in one lump, killing them both.

I'd consider over boarding it if you are worried. I don't trust my old lath and plaster ceilings, so I'm overboarding the artex then skimming, rather than just skimming
