Hi all.
Mcb tripping out with no load , upon trying to reset we get sparks from the near where mains feed comes into the property ( black box which says don't open) but before the consumer unit.. any ideas.

Would that cause sparking near the black box ( assuming it's the dno main fuse) when mcb is tripping? We have removed all plugs from sockets so no load at all and only tripping one mcb.

Turn all the outgoing circuits off, then go again with the MCB. Same result?

You may have unplugged everything, but a fault to earth or to neutral is still a load

Nozzle

That is a RCBO so it’ll trip on a fault
to earth. How long ago was the CU fitted?

Sounds like a large overload to me, possible cable damage shorting out somewhere. Rodents or similar.

I think the ring circuit needs to be removed from the RCBO and thoroughly tested by an electrician not a DIY option i'm afraid

Contact whoever installed it if possible and ask them to check the ring final on the Ground sockets

did the spark who installed the cu give you a certificate? If so having this available for somebody investigating the issue might be helpful

Does it still trip the RCBO (the one with the 'TEST' button), if all of those MCB's are set to off/down?

I am assuming the spark from the area of the DNO fuse, must mean a L to E fault, rather than a lower current N to E fault, hence my suggesting turning all of those MCB's to the off position for a test.

Aside from your above problem, it seems there may be a poor connection at the DNO's fuse, hence the sparking you are reporting - so that needs investigating by the DNO.

Thanks for all the replies.
Called 105 and had someone out last night , degradation underneath fuse housing and earth connection. Stripped back and change to new . Still got mcb tripping but while power was down checked a few sockets , think one needs attention by a sparky so await him coming( looks like damp in socket as oxidation on some fittings and cable).
