What options are there to finish an MDF surface?

Have made a coffee table, 2 by 4 ft, and decided to go with MDF for the top and was going to paint it but am now wondering what other options I have to make it shine.

stain it then 50 coats of varnish.
in other words,the worlds your oyster.

take an off cut off the mdf wet the bottom off a cup leave a ring on the mdf remove the cup 3 hrs later and notice the dammage
