I am drywalling my workshop ceiling where a couple skylights are installed. The roof rafters are 2 x 10's and I need to install a casing to finish the opening around each skylight. I would appreciate advice on using 3/4" MDF for this purpose. This appears to me to be the most convenient and cost effective material. I plan to apply primer/sealer and two coats of latex enamel paint. Would I have any cause for concern if an occasional rain shower got the painted MDF caseing wet before I could close the skylights?

Would the primer and two coats of latex paint be sufficient to protect the MDF from deteriorating from the occasional moisture?

Hi Paul and welcome!

You'll really need to use at lea MR-MDF (moisture-reisitant MDF) which has a green core not standard MDF as there is a possibility moisture contact. I doubt that you'll need exterior grade MDF.
