Hi all,

My partner's flat has a Megaflo 125 litre unvented hot water cylinder with 2 immersion elements. Installed 2007 so almost 20 years old.

The lower one has failed. Pulled off the thermostat today and one spade connector has completely corroded through. It must have not been working for a long time and the upper one has been compensating.

It looks to be a unique fitment compared to a standard immersion. It's about £160 for a complete kit of upper and lower immersion elements and new thermostats.

I've had a quote for the job and they want £360 Inc parts. So that's about £200 on top of the parts which doesn't sound unreasonable.

But it seems quite a doable job. Drain the tank, undo the old element with the special tool supplied with the kit and reverse the procedure to refit.

Tempted to get someone in for the convenience factor on this but saving £200 is not to be sniffed at either. Any thoughts?

Unvented cylinders and their associated parts should be serviced annually . Only plumbers that are G3 certified can do this.
I suggest you engage one. Do you know how often services have been done over the 20 years ?

Never most likely. There's not much to it though, it's not a central heating connected tank. Just a tank, 2x immersion elements, and a pressure relief on the side.
