Hi,

Appreciate your views - We replaced a metal double socket with another - wiring it exactly the same (i.e. grounding the face plate). We wanted to check we've not missed anything!

The 'old' socket has a metal face (but plastic switches); the 'new' socket has a metal face (as well as metal switches).

Using a non-contact voltage tester - it shows that the 'new' socket's face plate is safe to touch. However, the pen detects voltage when I press it against the switches of the socket (when the electricity is on, but the switch on the socket is otherwise off). Is this normal and safe?

Many thanks!

As long as earthed OK, my non contact tester with detect voltage at quite a distance Testing for live.jpg although mine does show 4 levels with 4 bars.

Did you check to make sure you had a good earth to start with...if yes and you have run a fly lead to the faceplate then all is good.....also is it rcd protected?

Non-contact testers are not the best way of testing, and are not recommended by the IET. What you’re getting is just an “alarm” that live electric is close-by. You’ll get exactly the same when moving close to a L terminal on a plastic socket. These devices are not accurate, not entirely to be relied on, but do have their uses.
