Hi, i'm putting in a metal rail fence , but will have to put one of the metal posts hard up against an existing tree trunk. The trunk itself isn't that big (about 7" dia) , but i'm worried about running into problems with the root and sunterean part of the trunk getting in the way of the post. I guess i just cements 3 of the 4 side of the post?.

what's the common approach this this?

Alter the spacing between posts so that you can avoid the tree or remove the tree. Removal might be the better option if the tree will cause damage to the fence later as diyisfun advises.
