We just bought a new microwave as our Panasonic one has started to disintegrate inside in less than 3 years (coated, not SS). Our new one is a Russel Hobbs with a SS interior. The only snag is, the instructions state it needs 30cm clearance above it, but all our others have never needed more than 15cm. Do these clearances matter a great deal? You have built in microwaves which will have less clearance. The overhang above is non combustible, just wondering if the clearances are for kitchen cupboards above it ? It's a shame you can't find these things out until you buy the item. Clearances either side are no problem.

I am sure the manufacturers will give dimensions that will leave no possibility of damage to customers kitchen surfaces. In reality it is probably overkill. My new 900W stainless one just emits warm air from the exhaust and has only a couple of inches clearance above it and a couple of millimeters on one side. The casing does not appear to get exssiveley hot to the touch which I think would be more of a concern if it did.
