I think I know why, that is, that the overflow stand pipe in the cistern was connected to the bath waste downstream of any trap. Ergo, the overflow pipe is open to the pong in the main waste.

Is there a solution to this, like a mini aav that would open to let water out if the level rose? Ping pong ball on top of the pipe?

Thanks.

PS I did a test by plugging the overflow for a few hours, and the smell went away.

PPS, I can't check my suspicion of the connection, it's boxed in.

You could possibly fit a different flush valve and do away with the existing overflow.

Thought about that- it is a close coupled toilet, and wondered whether it was retrofittable? You're suggesting buying new guts for the cistern? The toilet has a handle flush though, can you get those AND do away with the overflow? I assume any overflow goes down the pan then?

Not aware of a mini aav, change flush valve for one with an internal overflow into the pan and seal off the existing overflow pipe.
