The company that produced writing pads t I used went bust.

Their competitors under cut them with lower margins.

That said....I always preferred the margin on the side.

The problem lies in subsequent undercutting.
The original product is overpriced ,thats a given.
The second manufacturer can easily undercut but still produce a reasonable replica.
But we always insist on cheaper so the next fake will have corners cut.
It goes on and on until you get the spontaneous combustion variant

Ive been charging my batteries in my storage shed.
Safer in that its not the house yet not so safe as its not supervised.

I have a couple of timer plugs hanging about i think using these may be wise, having what you say.
