Good evening,

A few years back we had fitted a 10 kw electric shower but the plumber installed without upgrading the mcb (the old shower was about 6kw on a 32 amp fuse). Another electrician said the replacement mcbs for this unit are now obsolete. Is that correct and if so is a new CU required (there are four blank fuseways). The CU was installed late 1990 and uses all mcbs.

Thanks.

To start with, Is the cable 10sq mm? if not you should contact a registered electrician and look seriously at a partial re-wire at the least including a CU change to RCD protection. A cable of less than 10.0sq mm will be running at close to maximum load on a 10kw shower and could present a risk of overheating.

Can you pick your MCB style from the following line up?

You'll need an RCD on that shower too. Do you have one in your consumer unit?
If not, you'll need a new board or a separate mini-consumer unit to serve the shower.

PS Nice main switch RF!

Thanks wingcoax - the cable is 10mm but the shower trips the mcb when the temperature control is turned to the highest.

RF lighting- the fourth picture is closest the mcbs is marked LN 5932 at the top and with the current and Mark 2 at the bottom. The CU is marked 5500.

Taylortwocities - there are no rcds at present only mcbs.

thanks blup

Thanks to all for your helpful replies - will get a qualified electrician in the circumstances
