Monitor display problems

So, i want to use my nice new monitor for xbox as well as pc so bought a vga splitter/ switching box. Now when using the pc and i try to set the monitor to 1920x1080 i only get about 70% of the screen, as if its too zoomed in.

What can you offer this techno klutz?

whats the make & model of this box, is it active or passive, some boxes do not support all resolutions.

thanks for the reply, it seems to be working for now for some unknown reason so i'm not touching anything in case i jinx it.

you may well be right about the box, it is pretty basic
