what size of notch to use when spreading the adhesive? obviously don't want adhesive squeezing through grout lines. and is there a secret to getting them to stick flat? ie. use a piece of board to press down? difficult questions for a mosaic novice and I want it to look right, thanks for any help.

Use a mosaic trowel - 4mm square notches at 8mm centres. I use a plastering hawk to tamp down but you could improvise by using a piece of ½” plywood with handle nailed to it or anything flat really. A nice flat tile base helps enormously.
