In general PIR switches with just a live and switched live connection wont work with low or inductive loads, as they have solid state circuits and rely on constant current flow through a lamp filament.
PIRs with a neutral connection will have a pair of contacts in them - these will be able to control a fluorescent or LED load.

Indeed, and another point is that many switch points dont have a neutral wire present. Some rewiring may be nessecary!
But you (typically) wouldn't want your PIR halfway up the wall just inside the doorway facing into the room..
Had one fitted at work, and if you use heavy duty masking tape you can mask it off if you want - its very sensitive.
Or you could interrupt its line supply by putting a switch in series with it on the supply side.
Maybe you could find a neat switch which could be flush mounted on the wall in a convenient location - single pole would do.... you could perhaps use twin & earth to go to the switch and carry the return from it....
