I have a box full of cartridge fuses, a friend of mine has said they may be motor rated? how do i tell by looking?

If they have a BS88 rating then they can be used for motors.

Motor rated fuses usually have a rating such as 20M32 which means they are the size of a 20A fuse but have the short term characteristics of a 32A fuse.
However any standard cartridge fuse can be used for motors but you need to check its time/current characteristics as this will depend whether it will open under the starting current of the motor, which can be up to 7X FLC for a DOL motor and maybe more under certain applications.
Motor rated fuses are handy because you can use smaller rated cables/switchgear.

gG is a general fuse
gM is a motor fuse. I think aM is also a motor fuse but doesn't provide full protection.
