I have an old house in the mining valleys of South Wales which is built of solid stone walls. We are experiencing black mould patches in the corners of walls and ceilings upstairs. When we moved we installed double glazing but that's not to say the damp wasn't there before and decorated over. Being an old terraced house the attics along the row are all open to each other so ventilation is good, pointing is good, and tiles and felt are good and window silicone is good. Downstairs is ok though where we replastered with Gypsum plaster, upstairs is still the old black mortar render walls. Any suggestions to the cause and cure?

Cause most likely condensation, made worse by the installation of double glazing. Cure is to get more ventilation in the rooms, leave trickle vents open in windows if they were installed with them.

Did you have the property surveyed before purchase? If so, did they surveyor not pick up on the lack of fire walls in the loft space? Most mortgage companies won't lend on a property without them.
