I have just got out of bed because I cannot sleep. My legs have started moving about whilst I just lie there looking at the darkened ceiling. Does anyone else get this moving leg syndrome? :(

"Restless Legs"

Not me but I've seen it. The previous person smoke and drank coffee a lot, which I suspected contributed. Unfortunately people who are addicted to cigarettes and caffeine will argue strongly that their addictions have no ill effects and will refuse to stop.

One says "No one knows what causes restless legs, but researchers think it is probably due to a lack of availability of dopamine (a chemical transmitter) in a small area of the brain or spinal cord, rather than a problem in the legs themselves.

In three-quarters of sufferers, the tendency to restless legs is inherited.
In a few people (usually elderly), it is due to a shortage of iron.
Some people have restless legs only when they are pregnant or find that pregnancy worsens it.
Sometimes a similar feeling occurs in people who have illnesses that affect small nerves in the skin (such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis).
Stress, fatigue, smoking, caffeine and alcohol can all make it worse.
Some medications (for example, antidepressants and calcium channel blocker drugs for blood pressure) can cause or worsen restless legs. "

Another says:
"There is evidence from large study groups in the US and Europe that suggest that RLS is associated with a higher body-mass index, lower income, smoking, lack of exercise, low alcohol consumption and diabetes mellitus. Women may be affected marginally more often than men and the disorder may have different frequencies in different ethnic and national groups. Recent evidence suggests a higher incidence amongst patients with somatic complaints (including cardiac problems and hypertension) and it is hypothesised in those with neuropsychiatric symptoms."

Sorry you cant sleep.....RLS is what it is called...Restless Leg Syndrome...try googling it if no one else can help.... ;)

Hello,
Last time I went to see bike racing at Brands Hatch circuit I had an hour long attack of the RLS whilst pillion on my mates superbike.
What an experience that was !! He pulled over at first, to see if I could 'walk' it off, no joy ! But then we had to crack on, it kinda shook the whole bike in some places en route, and somehow added to my adrenaline rush  ...
