WHEN will I learn not to undertake plumbing jobs on a weekday evening? I set out to take a leaking shower pump out of the system last night and ended up with no hot water at all - the bloke who built the house seems to have bodged the Essex boss with something resembling cork floor tile, which has gone brittle so as soon as I moved the pipework it all started leaking.

So I'm off to Mr Khan's plumbing emporium this morning (day off work) to buy my first 3/4" Essex boss. Luckily my neighbour is a retired plumber and he will help me but have any of you experts got any tips for what I anticipate will be a tricky job?

How will I remove the old boss, for a start?

Gee you guys are such comics!

I did it anyway, without too much trouble. Had to drive flippin' miles to buy the part though.

Now for a nice hot shower......
