Boris appears at first look, to have put forward a number of pretty sensible changes.
Some are certainly "pushing it a bit", but that's one way to get things changed. DO IT and deal with the consequences.

The wording of the Protocol and GoodFA are "interpretable". It'll be interesting to see how it all comes out after everyone's finished having their hissy fits.

I'm no fan of Boris, but this tactic might work.

From our SPS statistics (TRACES system), we can see that Rotterdam performs 33% of physical checks on food products of animal origin, while Belfast only performs 2% and Larne 1.5%. From this point of view, official controls at Rotterdam are definitely more numerous, and more in line with the minimum frequency rates for physical checks laid down in EU legislation.

If the protocol was fully implemented then companies like M&S would have have to fill in 700 pages of documentation to send one lorryload of goods to N.I.
Sir Archie Norman, the head of M&S said the Protocol was already damaging their business in N.I.and if fully implemented M&S would have to close their stores in N.I. which have been there for nearly 60years.

Yes I did indeed read all of it, the bit youve quoted is the claim made which the article goes on to show is misleading


later in the article:
it responds to Permanent Secretary Denis McMahon, misleading claim with this:

"20% of documentary** SPS checks take place in NI – i.e. that one fifth of a certain subcategory of a certain type of check take place here. "

**and please note it is documentary checks not physical checks


this is a perfect example of a dishonest claim that gets spread to the point it gets stated by people believing genuinely it is true

Some one has to do the physical checks at source before filling out these documents in order to comply.
Why should any checks be necessary anyway, if you are trading within your own country.

Because Northern Ireland is aligned to RoI and the EU -ie NI is in the single market for goods
and goods cant cross from the UK being a 3rd country into the single market -those are in different regulatory jurisdictions

the reality is the checks arent the problem

the problem is the DUP dont like goods appearing on supermarket shelves that originate from RoI and EU and are replacing UK goods


and the other big problem is NI is doing better than the GB because it is in the Single Market....the govt hate that, it undermines brexit
businesses in NI cant be bothered with the trade barriers buying from GB so are now buying from RoI or direct from EU mainland.

The point still stands that this was an "Oven Ready Deal" and personally negotiated by Lord Frost and Boris who claimed it was

I couldn't find anything in that article accusing Denis McMahon of making misleading claims. It says they are comparing apples with oranges so to speak.
