narrowing pine unit?

Have a lovely pine unti with overhanging top and bottom, from rest of unit. I have a alcove that I want it in but it is about 3/4ins too wide, what is the best thing to use to remove the extra? I have very few tools, and I am female! although that shouldnt matter. Please help.

Probably the best tool to use would be a smoothing plane - you need to remove 3/8ths of an inch off both sides to make it equal. If you could get hold of an electric plane the job (plus any mistake!) would happen much quicker.
If any wood end grain is evident, you need to plane inwards in both directions to prevent splintering.
