Just wondering what sort of qualifications and training you need to work for them on HV lines, sub-stations and plant? Are their guys regarded as a breed apart from REC shift electricians etc?

HV work is a totally different field of electrical engineering from LV work.
The safety aspects/ theory are similar as we are still dealing with electricity but the consequences of mistakes can be a lot more severe both from a danger point of view and a supply point of view.

The control is a lot stricter also as regards isolation/re-instatement etc.
