Necessary to remove screed?

Hello,

I am due to have a new laminate floor fitted soon. Having removed the old laminate I have discovered that the concrete floor has had a thin (3mm) screed/levelling compound put over it to make it smooth.

Unfortunately this screed has started crumbling in places and it is possible to remove large sheets of it in some areas, although elsewhere it is stuck fast to the concrete floor.

As I will need to have a new screed put down, is it necessary to chip up all of the old stuff or to just get rid of the loose bits and allow the new screed to do the rest of the work? Hopefully the latter!

you could do with finding out why it failed in the first place as the same may happen to the new stuff you put down. It could be down to loads of things. The most commen faults are-

*Water based compound over damp subfloor
*Incorrect mixing
*Not primmed or incorrect primer used for subfloor
*Subfloor weak and shearing
*movement in subfloor
*Just very old and had hard life!

Really if it has started to fail the rest will follow so i would take it all up!
