Need help --been "cowboy'd"

Yes drain down from a drain point on the rads. Are you sure the leaking rad valve couldn't just be stopped by repacking the gland nut on the valve?

Well, i did as you guys suggested. Drained down OK and i have replaced the leaking valves either side of the pump.

However, the problem lies with the cylinder. This morning it looked more imploded than last evening!! When i looked at the cold cistern i noticed that the vent pipe had been bent flat so was completley blocked.

This i fixed and then began to very, very slowly refill the cylinder. But it has sprung a leak!!

Does anyone know where i can get hold of a cheap replacement. I know i need a new system and next year i will have it all ripped out and get a condensing combi fitted. Can't do that at the moment so need to go down the repair route.

Many thanks again all that provide excellent advice.

If you can live with a combi that will combine replacing the cylinder AND the boiler for about £2000 upwards. IF a combi is suitable that may be better value for money.

If yuou just replace the cylinder do get a standard indirect cylinder and have a new header tank. That will be little more that a new primatic and possibly even cheaper!

proberbly would if you know what your doing.

I've done quite a few plumbing jobs now so will be OK.

So it looks like i need to convert to an indirect cylinder and a header tank.
Would someone talk me through how to install it. Obviously i use the cold tank which was above the primatic to supply the cold inlet at the bottom and reconnect the hot outlet at the top. flow and return in at the sides.

Its connecting up the header tank i need advice on.

'mmmm, £437.38 inc VAT

surely it would be preferable to convert to a normal indirect cylinder at this point?

a bit more plumbing to do, though

Thanks for the link John.

I shall eventually replace this old system with the old floor standing boiler for a combi. As things stand at home i can't do this until late spring when i will get the whole old system and rads ripped out. Hence making the repair to tide us over until then.

When you find out, maybe you could phone the original plumber up and let him know

Tried again all this morning. Mobile still switched off. Looks like he's long gone so have to put this one down to experience. A couple of others recommended to me are all booked up for weeks.

I know...

Like i said, i can pipe up the header tank. Its just knowing where to take the vent and outlet to the heating side.

you can use a combined Feed and Expansion pipe now (formerly you had to use two pipes), must be in 22mm, goes to the bottom of the F&E tank which must be above the highest point of your system.

They are usually put in the loft

It is usually joined close to the pump, to the suction side. I don't know if it can be put at any other point. the Tee where it joins is the place most likely to get a sediment blockage, so if you do it as a compression joint it will be easier to open if this happens. as your old Primatic system will not have had inhibitor in it, I would have thought there would be a fair amount of corrosion residue so you can clean this out when you have finished replumbing.

I don't know a link for system design diagrams, but I'm sure someone will.

I am just a householder.
