A plug-in mains tester is showing a neutral fault on all my sockets.
These sockets have previously tested ok and I have had no electrical work done since the previous test. (I only tested today because I came across my tester whilst looking for something else.)
What could have caused this fault to arise? Is it dangerous?

If there really was a neutral fault as indicated by that tester, then none of your sockets would work with anything else you have.

As this is obviously not the case, it is likely that the tester is defective.

Indeed,
To have a plug in tester show neutral as a fault in multiple sockets where an appliance works then your test equip is at fault

It could be one of a number of things:
1) a faulty tester as said
2) L/N reversal
3) L-E fault with a missing RCD and a high impedance earth (such as an earth rod).
If either number 2 or 3 you need it fixed by a qualified electrician asap
