Loose neutral wire

I could get my multi meter out but dont fancy taking all the sockets off the wall again

Just hold the earth pin open and stick the probes in. or wire a some cable to a plug and choc blocks on the other end.

Rubbish. If the socket tester is saying no neutral there is no way the socket will work OK.

Also tells us " all is working fine" but tester shows neutral fault.

It would be handy to know if the tester is picking up a neutral fault on ALL the sockets on EACH ring, or ONE specific socket on each ring...

It would - and I presume that any/all sockets for which the tester indicated an 'absent neutral' would not actually 'work'.

Of course not. It would be an open circuit. Maybe a faulty terminal in the socket not making good contact with the tester? Pins too short on the knock off tester?

If the tester were of an unsatisfactory design, or was faulty, then obviously results from it would be meaningless. However, if the tester were satisfactory, and working satisfactorily, then its pins would presumably be no less likely to make good contact with the socket's receptacles than would be the pins of a plug plugged into the socket?
