Hello,

I am planning on replacing my boiler and understand that as part of the work, my system must be changed from a gravity hot water and pumped heating to a 'full pumped system' due to building regulations.

The problem I have is that my bathroom radiator is on what appears (as described by the gas man) by a loop of pipework that feeds the radiator at the top from the loft space above. This way, the radiator stays on all the way through the summer - as long as the boiler is firing.

Now the gas man has said this loop will have to be removed as this doesn't meet building regulations either. Is this correct as I cannot find the literature anywhere regarding this? It appears that once the system has been upgraded, I wont be able to use this radiator if the heating is turned off.

Is this correct and if so, can anyone point me in the right direction in the regulations that state this?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Mike.

That's in the Domestic Heating Compliance Guide (DHCG), Table 1, item b.

Provided the bathroom rad flow is connected after the pump, it complies with the fully pumped regulations. The only problem then is controlling the temperature when the central heating is off. A wall mounted thermostat in the bathroom (subject to electrical regulations) or a pipe thermostat on the feed to the rad in the loft should do the trick. This would be connected in parallel to the main room and cylinder stats.
