So I have had a few quotes to replace my old vented Gloworm with a possible WB sealed system and the most recent quote included these optional extras : 2 new 2 port zone valves, 1 Honeywell programmer, 1 new room stat, 1 new Imm. cylinder stat. £850 +vat. just for these extras. surely that cant be right?

do you currently have zone valves to independently have heating or hot water on by themselves and room thermostat at the moment?

If not, it’s not really an option, you need these to bring system up to standards.

As for price, can’t really comment without seeing the job, but remember it’s labour included to fit these and wire in, not just the cost of components.

They are all just replacements, I understand your point about labour but still seems excessive

I guess the bits are around £250 to £300 inc VAT if all Honeywell...so seems sky high to me if just replacing. Is the wiring being ripped out?

Only mention of Honeywell was programmer, wiring stays the same.

Scaffold may or may not be required. Some big firms automatically quote for it.

But you are obviously unhappy - get another quote.

EDIT: Just noted you have had a "few" quotes. How do they compare?

Sorry, that should be £3,000 plus vat. So £3600 all in.
Other quotes have been cheaper at about £2500 ish all in but some companies want up to 50% deposit.
I will get some more quotes but thanks for your input

I always charged about 25% deposit.
    Reasons?:
Nowt to do with cashflow actually.

Taking a deposit sorts out the time wasters. Too many folk place an order, then continue to out around for a better price. It isapain when you have all the materials in store, to then receive a cancellation. Normally on dubious grounds.
Also, I had an assistant who would deliver the gear a day or 2 agead, so the job could start prompt in the allotted morning. That has to be paid for, even if the punter turns rogue.
I also expected payment IMMEDIATELY on completion. Your £3k firm, I guess, is a big firm. They have people to chase debts.

I tend to not bother below £8k. But...I don't begrudge others expecting a deposit to cover materials and time expended to that point. It's standard practice.
