New build flats...

Hi,

I live in a concrete construction new build apartment block (2003). The flat next door has come up for sale and they expect it to go quickly.

Is it likely I would be able to knock through the two flats and connect them? Or will the walls be structural?

How can I easily check this?

If it's a high rise, I would imagine all inter-apartment walls are structural.

Should be able to fit a RSJ if needed.

Only way to know for sure is to consult a structural engineer with the buildings plan.

Also, check that you are legally allowed to make that modification. The building may have rules against it.

In a flat you will not own the building, you will own a lease, you will need to check with the leaseholder if they will allow this.

Oh, edit / he said / You said a new-build block of flats, are you sure you own the freehold to the *Building* (that means roof/walls/foundations/car park/grounds), not just to your apartment, you either confused or you describe an unusual situation.

Most apartment freeholds are not for the building, often the leaseholders buy a freehold through a management company set up by the residents, so all the freehold residents own the building, not any one resident.

If that's the case (and it would be unusual if it isn't on a block of flats), you need permission from the management company, aka all the resident freeholders.
