Afternoon,

I need to build a pillar on a external wall to fit a new door ( extension ?

The pillar basically needs to be the size of a standard dense concrete block laid flat
  • Height: 215 mm
  • Length: 440 mm
  • Width: 100 mm
Would it be structurally strong enough to lay these flat and stack bond them
Upto around 2 metres with two sets of wall starters?

Is there a better way ?
This pillar will be the vertical wall for French doors
Thanks
Jake

That’s a good question just don’t know how I can fit a cavity in 215mm.

Better to bond them in, not tie due to the load from the hinges and door swing. If tying, use rigid ties, not flexible wall starters.

A cavity is not required

Evening woody ,

I’m not sure how easy it will
Be to bond them
In as it’s a single skin wall it’s joining on to and insulated on the inside,
These are the wall starters I’ve been using but not sure if these are flexible or rigid ones?
Thanks
Jake

All wall starters are flexible and allow for some movement. All door frames, especially those with heavy doors/glazed doors put a lot of rotational load on the jamb they are fixed to, so there is a risk of slender piers cracking.

If its a single skin wall being joined to, it should be easy to block bond in the new pier.
