Pillars either side of garage side door

Hi all

Does anyone know what purpose these pillars serve?

I want to replace this door with French doors so I assume if these support the doors the builder needs to take one pillar off, extend the gap and rebuild before putting the French doors in

They seem to be laid flush with the garage wall and not tied into it (if that makes sense)

Are you sure they're not tied in, someone may have done it right and the half bricks you can see could be 3/4's with a Queen closer on the outside. It's a half brick wall so pillars are added to add strength, especially where a half brick wall ends.
