We have a 4 bedroom house with 2 bedroom annexe that is about 25 years old. We have had a garage built on with an attic room above plus we are having the kitchen and utility room completely refitted. Our electrician has informed us that we need a new 14 way distribution unit with 11 RCBOs. He has quoted us £664 inc. VAT to supply and fit this. This seems excessive to me. Can you advise if this is a reasonable price for this or should I look elsewhere?

Is he a member of a self certification scheme? You need to make sure this price includes testing of the installation, and the issue of certificates to you, and notification to building control.

Using RCBOs for each circuit is the best way to comply with the 17th edition regulations.
They can cost between £30/40 each so id say the price you have been given is aceptable.

I coax all my customers to have RCBO based boards, if you want the job cheaper ask about a dual RCD board, but bear in mind any fault will knock out half the circuits in the house, instead of an individual circuit.

Before we can really comment we need to know what you are actually buying. It's like asking, "I'm buying a car for £ 20,000, do you think that's expensive?
Well it's not if you're buying a 3 year old BMW M5 but it is if you're buying a 3 year year old Ford KA.
What make CU has been quoted?
Does it include an initial inspection?
Does the cabling need extending?
Does the earthing need upgrading?

Thank you for your replies. From these and others I have had it seems that this is about the right ball park figure which is all I was concerned about. I had no idea how costly something like this was likely to be.
