New gas main, gas engineer will not reconnect 2 appliances

Having some renovations in an old house, workman smelt gas.
Emergency gas service called out, they checked & detected small gas leak ~3-4mb and disconnected gas supply.


Gas engineer came to find gas leak, he could not find gas leak in original old pipework, there are unused terminated gas pipes running to rooms in the house.

He installed new gas main connecting to Central Heating Boiler & Bathroom Water Heater.


But he will not reconnect gas supply to small Flueless Gas Water Heater above sink in Kitchen and Gas Fire in Brick Chimney in Living Room,
he says they are old, out of date and not allowed.


Checking online it seems:

-small flueless gas water heater in kitchen is allowed.
-gas fire in brick chimney is allowed.


Is this correct, are these appliances allowed and can I get them reconnected ?

Do you have a vent for the flue less fire.
If no, then get one and have the fire checked. I would rip that fire out as they are nothing but a pain in the backside and can be killers too if they are not installed correctly ( no vent is an example of cutting corners)

Gas fire in chimney. Of course it is allowed. But what is the makers recomendation and what type is it LFE, flue less, decorative - all these can have different installation requirements.

It sounds like the appliances are all very old and obsolete in which case no sensible gas installer will want to deal with (there are also many regulations regarding flueless and open flued appliances) and in a renovation the builders/homeowner will often ignore.
Just buy a cheap electric water heater and oil fillled heater instead.
Water heaters were almost obsolete 20 years ago.
Post pics of all the appliances and we can give a better idea.

it sounds more like he hasnt got a clue and is scared of his own shadow .
Absolutely no rule about not reconnecting flueless sink water heater or an open flued gas fire
Before and after reconnecting them you would do any relevant safety checks and go from there .
You wouldnt just say not reconnecting them because they are old
Because something is old doesnt mean it is not safe to use ,i regularly work on 40 year old appliances
mates open flued boiler is now 53 years old and perfectly safe
