New gas main

Had a visit today from an agent from Cadent, our street is getting new gas mains, he did say there may be a chance our drive might be dug up, it was only put down a couple of years ago, I said fine as long as its re laid in total and not patched, one of my neighbours had his drive laid about three months ago, anyway Cadent man shook his head and said it was not possible, if we refuse to let them dig they will cut off the gas. Has anyone had a similar experience?

my road was done few years back. The gang included people who lay paths and paving, they did a very neat job. Doing it all day, and working their way along every house, they were quite skilled.

I don't think you can seriously expect them to lay an entire new drive for every householder who fancies one.

Our drives are tarmac and I have never seen a good repair, might be worth forming a united front if it comes to it, power to the people

Sometimes they could "mole" the new service pipe in, or push it up the old iron service pipe. Are they putting a box on the outside ?

They will usually trace the old pipe and dig a hole as close to the house as possible. They can then either slide a new pipe inside the old one if it's big enough or, as Ihavenojob says, drive a mole through to the hole without disturbing the main section of drive/path.
If you have any block paving they tend to remove a section of blocks to dig the hole and then re-lay them as per the original pattern.
Try to get something in writing/email from head office what they intend to do and what reparation they will perform to the drive/path.

No outside box, after a quick look round the estate I think they must have slipped a new pipe inside the old in most cases, will keep an eye on proceedings

It should be put back in no worse a condition or appearance as it was before. Imprinted concrete or resin bound would need a complete resurface, tarmac maybe, block paving, slabs or concrete no.
