Hi, I am looking for some advice and information on purchasing a combi boiler , fire , radiators etc . I currently have a baxi back boiler and a very old fire . I want to purchase the items when i can afford them , i want to start with the combi boiler but i have no idea were to start .The house is a semi detached with 3 bedrooms . I suppose i am looking for the commonly used biler on the market . Any help or advice would be appreciated . PS i will be getting a gas engineer to fit the equipment . Thanks

Its best to take advice from the proposed installer.

Its NOT a good idea to buy them yourself and certainly not good to buy and then stockpile as the guarantee starts from when its purchased.

I am sure you can understand and appreciate that some people cannot just go out and have the central heating system re done in one financial go. In a perfect world i would love to give the installer X amounts of pounds and let him get on with it . I need to work on a budget and purchase when i can afford , as for the warranty/gaurantee that is something i will have to live with . The installer that just serviced and put a new valve on my old system told me you can buy a complete kit that just needs a engineer to fit . He also told me i can put the new boiler in my cupboard were my exsisting immersion heater is . So he as been very helpfull to me but he as not got the time to sit down and tell what the best make boiler , do i leave old radiators in , etc . He did however advice me to look on thei tnternet to see if anyone could help with what is the best selling combi boiler and wher to get the kits and any advice from anyone who as purchased one . Thank you

If you have indicated that you are going to give him the job then he should be spending 30 minutes with you to discuss your requirements and give you a quotation.

Dont buy a boiler until you are ready to have it fitted. Keep the money in the bank until then and buy it the day before its to be fitted!

I have seen people advertising "new" boiler on Ebay which they bought five years ago.

Now the boiler is the wrong type ( non condensing ) and the warrantee has long expired!

Tony.

I can sympathise with your dilemma, but are you trying to say that you will buy the boiler, have it fitted, then later buy some rads, have them fitted, or actually as Tony has interpreted it, buy each component, stock plie them and have it all done together later?

If it is the latter I would suggest saving until such a time as you can afford it all done at once. It will be cheaper that way.

Going back to your question, I would, as a mainstream boiler, go for the Vaillant Ecotec Plus range, probably the 831 or 837 if you prefer baths mostly and have at least 15 l/min flow rate. I also fit the Glow Worm Ultracom range as a budget boiler, and luckily, unlike some on here have had very little problem with them.

Existing rads can be used, but make certain the whole existing system is properly flushed and cleansed, preferably with a Magnaclean or similar fitted as well.

You may be unlucky enough to have a pin hole appear in an old rad, which obviously would have to be replaced as an extra afterwards.

The airing cupboard is quite often the best place for a new combi, but flue termination and access to the gas meter should be taken into consideration, as both these could add substantially to the installation cost.

As far as I'm aware and certainly with the boilers I fit, the warranty starts on the date of installation, within reason, direct from the manufacturer. The warranty from the supplier will be restricted to the date of purchase though.

Different manufacturers will have different policies in that respect.

One that I know, will start the warrantee from the merchant's invoice date if the warrantee card is NOT returned.

If the warrantee card IS returned, then it is usually entered into the system without raising any eyebrows up to 12 months although if there is any claim under the warrantee they might ask questions.

However, the wording on the guarantee is very strictly defined as the PURCHASE date though!

Many of the fly by night landlords only send the warranty card in if the boiler fails and show it as "just installed". The sevice engineers are on the lookout for that though!

As far as I'm concerned the boilers I fit are purchased by the customer from me on the date of installation.

That is when the legal responsibilities of them being the customer and myself the seller come into effect.

Sound advice from all , thanks . I think i had a bit of a panic rush i will decide what boiler to have (within my budget) then go back to the installer . I dont want to waste is time not knowing what i really want .

Hi, since having our new valve fitted on saturday we are experiencing some strange noises every now and then from our heating system . The hot water only as been on the timer for 4 hours and around every hour or so the noise seems like a gurgling clang for about 15 secs then stops ,it apears to be coming from the area where the imersion heater ,pipes and pump are . The system is working fine and i can here the pump working .I will have to give the chap who did the valve a call i know but any help before i do could save me getting him out . Thanks

Check the header tank to see if its pumping over when it makes the noise.

He might well have put the valve in backwards if its a two port!

I am beginning to think he may not be the best installer for a new boiler!

Its just happened about 30 secs ago and i got to the airing cupboard to hear it , their seemed to be i bit of vibration from the top then a rush of water around the area were the pipes go into the immersion heater then it was ok . I know i will need to get the engineer out again but was hoping someone with a bit of experience may be able to tell me its not very very bad news . Thanks

The engineer as been today and he seems to think (given my description) that their is air in the system . On one of the pies in the airing cupboard is one which as a plastic threaded cap and he told me to just loosen it take it off then put it back on again . ................ I then asked him for a top of his head quote for a new combi boiler fitted . £1750 plus vat for the boiler (spanish one forgot the make and model) £200 /£300 for a fire . Around £3000 complete .
