I have recently added and new light to my portch along with a switch. The cable I have to feed the switch is from a previous wall light then 1.5 cable to the rose. I'm a novice with electrics and I am unsure if I have the switch wired up wrong? From what I found online I have the brown to the common port, black and blue to L1 and red to L2?

Thank you in advance.

99er, it might be an idea to carefully but clearly photograph the various connection points in your installation and provide those pictures here to aid those giving you advice. From your description, it sounds a bit dangerous, particularly if this involves wiring exposed outdoors, so be careful.

Assuming one cable has a live and neutral feed in and one goes out to a working light fitting, that should work. Of sorts.

If the brown is permanent live, with the switch in one position it will trip the CPD.

I'm still alive. Thanks for the replies.

The red/black cable was an excisting wall light which I have ran to the new switch, I am unsure where it comes from but I was told by an electrician friend after he checked it that it will be fine to run to the switch. He is away for a few weeks and I need this sorting so the wife will have one less thing to moan about.

The CPD did trip when the switch was in a certain position, does that mean I've wired it wrong? Or there is a problem with the excisting cable?

Not sure if this pic helps but it's all I have at the moment. I could take more tomorrow if needed?

Thanks again.

Certain position? Surely the switch is either 'on' or 'off'?

Certain position, yes.

On or off? Not quite. Not the way it's been wired.

But it will trip if the brown is the live feed as when the 2 way switch is in one of its positions it will connect to L1, to which the neutrals have been connected.

You will need a DMM to sort this out, and a bit of knowledge.

You will need to connect neutrals and CPC's through the switch and just connect the lives to the switch terminals.

That's permanent live to common & switch live to L1. But do some reading up first and you're at all unsure, get your spark out to it.
