Wondered if anyone can help out here. I have a new light switch that has L1 L2 and common. The old light switch only had L1 L2 L3 and L4. The red went into L1 and black into L3.

How do I wire up the new switch? I do have a multimeter but don't like using it when the main is still on!

If you only have 2 wires put one into com, and the other into L1. (or L2 as its only a 1 way circuit.)

edit: if new switch has metal face plate this MUST be earthed.

Does it not matter which colour I use? Won't one will be switched and the other a perminant live?

Ok so all should be good then.

Out of curiosity if I switch my multimeter to tone and I connect from earth to black and it sounds is this the switched or perm live?
