Having a joiner/builder round to cut a new opening for the loft as our current one is too small and above the stairs.

He says he has done plenty before. Just wanted some advice on what I should check with him before he starts, I don't want to have to pay for a new roof!

Also, should he be cutting through joists, or should he be cutting between them?

He will almost certainly need to cut through some of the ceiling ties but should trim them out to the surrounding intact ones.
He would really have to go some to trash the roof.

If he has a choice it's always better to cut ones that have already been cut, as when you trim them they won't provide the same tension on the rafters. But having said that the main things just make sure he knows what he's cutting, someone on here recently posted photos where a joiner cut through a binder and didn't add any meaningful support, a binder is the thing that stops the ceiling sagging.
